Midwife Cath’s Principles on parenting

  • You cannot love your child too much
  • Be fun, have fun, laugh often with your child
  • Be firm and consistent
  • No means no…it does not mean try and wear me down till I say yes!
  • Create boundaries and explain them to your child
  • Encourage the truth and do not punish when the truth is told
  • Choose your battles…let the minor issues go
  • Enjoy their music (this gets tough…believe me.  I’m into Hip Hop now!)
  • Go to the park together, walk and talk about nature
  • Tell your child you love him, every day
  • Tell your child he is a good person
  • Be positive even when it is hard to find any good words
  • Talk to your child when he is in the bath; talk about his day, his friends, his challenges
  • Avoid dramas at dinnertime.  Eat at the table and don’t follow your child around the house with food
  • Lots of hugs, kisses and cuddles. Love unconditionally
  • Don’t say cruel or hurtful words to your child
  • Do not hit, push or pinch your child
  • Use your words quietly or have short times of being silent…its more powerful
  • Do not stop parenting your child, especially as they get older.  They need to refer to you constantly
