- You cannot love your child too much
- Be fun, have fun, laugh often with your child
- Be firm and consistent
- No means no…it does not mean try and wear me down till I say yes!
- Create boundaries and explain them to your child
- Encourage the truth and do not punish when the truth is told
- Choose your battles…let the minor issues go
- Enjoy their music (this gets tough…believe me. I’m into Hip Hop now!)
- Go to the park together, walk and talk about nature
- Tell your child you love him, every day
- Tell your child he is a good person
- Be positive even when it is hard to find any good words
- Talk to your child when he is in the bath; talk about his day, his friends, his challenges
- Avoid dramas at dinnertime. Eat at the table and don’t follow your child around the house with food
- Lots of hugs, kisses and cuddles. Love unconditionally
- Don’t say cruel or hurtful words to your child
- Do not hit, push or pinch your child
- Use your words quietly or have short times of being silent…its more powerful
- Do not stop parenting your child, especially as they get older. They need to refer to you constantly
